What is favicon.ico?
What is favicon.ico? If you are a webmaster, you may have seen references in your server logs to reference favicon.ico. A "favicon" is short for "favourites icon". This is an icon that is associated with a particular website, and the icon that appears when the site is added to the users favourites list, or bookmarks. The icon will also be displayed in the address bar. Originally, to reference the favicon, the file was placed in the root directory of the web server. However, it is more common now to reference the favicon in the "head" section of the html document. The file can be referenced as follows: <link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" /> As most browsers implement both methods, it often creates servers logs saying that "favicon.ico" does not exist. This is an annoyance for some webmasters as it often leads to longer log files and extra CPU time and diskspace. These files must be approximatly 16x16 pixels, and although they are usually in .ico format, some browsers will support .png or .gif formats. Although animated gifs may work, most choose to not use them as this is often seen as an annoyance from users who will quickly remove the favourite/bookmark from their machiens. They can be created in a number of ways - windows' icon editor, A lot of webpage authoring software will create them, or there are plenty of places online that will create them for free. favicon's are an easy way to add recognition to your website, and they are worth creating simply due to their ease of use. |
